First I checked the ULS logs, which didn't reveal anything out of the ordinary. I was trying to bring up a new Sharepoint site, when I tried to browse the site (www.example.com/Pages/Default.aspx), Sharepoint gave me a generic ‘file not found' error. The bolded part showed a ASCX file not found. Initially I thought SharePoint was throwing this error because of a fault in the configuration or something.
Download the default.aspx to you computer and fix it (remove the web part and the <%Register tag). The hardest is if I do all the above and it is still there, then it is usually a custom List. SP2013 has issues with this. I will try the failed request tracing now and get back here with the results. There's more information on setting that up here: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/266/troubleshooting-failed-requests-using-tracing-in-iis-70/(you'll notice the example is actually tracing a 404.2 response due to a disabling ASP). You may want to make sure you are doing this for your site or apponly, though, to make sure you don't affect the other services on the server.
