Sharepoint 2010 Error This Document Could Not Be Checked Out
I noted that this problem only appears when I use the FQDN in the URL ex 'http://hostname.domain.com/default.aspx'. I tried turning it off and back on to no effect. Many things did not work correctly out of the box on the two-server farm, while everything worked instantly on the standalone farm. I hope this will help you out.

This Document Could Not Be Checked Out. You May Not Have Permission
I am not sure how to escalate. But I still don't know what broke it... If we activate the "Require check out" feature in document librarys the check out failed. This may or may not be your issue, but I have seen it fairly frequently.
She'd click a doc on SharePoint, it would prompt to check it out; but once opened in Excel it would still be read-only and no options to check it out. It is probably a complete coincidence. On a fresh SharePoint 2010 farm, created a site and uploaded a few documents. Sharepoint Can't Check Out Document Use the check in/out function from within Word and not in SP.
